Laptop forgotten password

Hello,

I have a toshiba satellite lap top. i gave it to my 9 yr old since i replaced it with a new one. he reset the password and forgot what he reset it too. needless to say, we can't log in now. can anyone help me reset the password or restore it to factory default settings? i've tried powering up while holding down 0 and it did not work. F8 brings me to a screen to repair the lap top but still requires a password...dead end.
