My brothers iPod is doing something weird

Hello, im kelsey and i have an ipod touch. so does my brother and he wanted some new songs on his ipod. the thing is is that he plugged it in and it started doing its thing. but after at least 5 hours it wasnt even half way. while it was still plugged in it had the logo (an apple) and below it it had a bar that was like 1/8 or 1/16 of the way full. the next day it was unplugged and i tried holding down the power button and the menu button and the logo and the bar dissapeared. then it told me to plug it into itunes. that is the only thing it will do besides show the apple (this time just the apple) and maybe the bar with it. what do i do? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
