Screen glitch/blank on HP laptop

Hello, I was using my computer last night and all of a sudden the screen glitches, showing pixelated pinkish colors across the now blurry screen. The computer was frozen so after a hard shutdown I rebooted and the screen is completely black. I hear it working, the front light says the hard drive is spooling, but no screen. I let it sit overnight and this morning I attempted to use it. It worked for five minutes then repeated the glitch. Now I can't get it to work at all. I tried to use an external monitor to see if it was just the screen and it would not connect to an external monitor using a VGA cord. Any help would be much appreciated.
