Hello,

since i was having the problem that my laptop (dell inspiron 1525 ,vista premium 2gb ram 250 gb hd, c drive 222 gb, d drive 10gb intel core duo2) was having a memory 182 gb but after restarting it now says 172.6 gb free spce, on searching on net, i came to know about tree size software , so i installed it on my laptop,it says that c drive used space is 40gb, but reads free space as 173 gb and total space of it is 222gb, so there is loss of 8-9gb mysteriously,i have tried disk cleaner, ccleaner, ncleaner, but that doesn't work , can any solve it please , i would salute him/her and say him a tech guru

The lost space never existed. You have discovered the difference between actual and
advertised space. The drive manufacturers sell the drives based on unformatted base 10 math space. Microsoft reports the size after formatting and uses base 16 math. So you get two different capacities.

Advertised --- Actual Capacity
10GB --- ~9.31 GB
20GB --- ~18.63 GB
30GB --- ~27.94 GB
40GB --- ~37.25 GB
60GB --- ~55.88 GB
80GB --- ~74.51 GB
100GB --- ~93.13 GB
120GB --- ~111.76 GB
160GB --- ~149.01 GB
180GB --- ~167.64 GB
200GB --- ~186.26 GB
250GB --- ~232.83 GB
320GB --- ~298.02 GB
400GB --- ~372.53 GB
500GB --- ~465.66 GB
750GB --- ~698.49 GB
1TB --- ~931.32GB
