I apologize if I made the request without telling you how much I really appreciate the help. I tried what you suggested. I am still running the malware full scan. In the meantime while I was scanning I got a message from Avira stating that
The file 'C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E7B21304-9105-4D9D-AFAC-E7088FDCC6A0}\RP19\A0006538.exe'
contained a virus or unwanted program 'WORM/Krepper.C' [worm]
Action(s) taken:
The file was moved to the quarantine directory under the name '4fe605d0.qua'.
I have many messages stating this for just today. I got another message from avira stating that it found 47 malware while scanning?
I am somewhat overwhelmed at this point. Wishing I could chuck this computer and buy a new one. Since I am broke today, that won't happen. So if by chance you have the time and are so inclined I would appreciate any advice you might offer.
Sincerely yours,
Julia

Once again, I am very grateful for anyone's help here. My computer has discovered another virus: TR/Spybot.kr1 in the system volume information. In addition to this discovery the Work Krepper.C is infecting the system volume information. When it pops up with the information is states: "access denied" and asks me what to do. I choose to remove it. It goes away and comes back with a statement that it found 3 other viruses. It asks me what to do. I say remove it. Help?!
I am totally overwhelmed. If anyone would like to help me I will be ever so grateful.
I ran Avira scan again. I found another TR/spybot.kr1. After this, my sound returned, the audio device appeared. This is progress.
Sincerely yours,
Julia

Hello Julia,
Great! Should you require further help on any of your computer need, please return, you are most welcome.
Thank you very much for sharing your solution.
Farewell
P.S. It was a great idea of yours to include a Hyjackthis report so I could not resist helping you. I wish that more people would think about it when it comes to viruses and security.
You are a sweet person.

Greetings Oh great Julia,
You have not bothered to even say please. I must be your devoted, well paid servant or slave.
Please, I beg of you oh Great Julia run another Hyjackthis scan without the log and once the scan is over, I pray that you will check the following items. Once all items checked, I beseach you to click on fix checked and to close Hyjackthis. Here are the items to be checked:

Finally oh Great One, if it pleases you...
Download, install and run Malwarebyte which you can find on this site:
https://ccm.net/downloads/security-and-maintenance/4621-malwarebytes-anti-malware/ es-anti-malware
Ensure you make an update.
Please request a FULL system scan, which may take from 20 minutes to hours. Do not interfere no matter how long in takes. The creators of Malwarebyte recommend that while the tool is running that you go do something else, such as watching a rerun of Gone with the Wind or read Tolstoy's War and Peace.
If Malwarebyte restarts your system, launch it again to finish the Full scan.
When the scan is completed, delete all items found.
Once your computer is clean and working normally just to be on the safe side
*Turn off system restore and wait 30 seconds,
*Turn it back on and create a new restore point.
This way it gets rid of anything bad that might have gotten saved in a restore point and you have a clean restore point to use in the near future if needed.
Do not turn it off until your computer is clean and working normally because you might need to use it if something goes wrong during the clean-up process.
It is better to go back to an infected restore point if something goes wrong then to not be able to undo changes that were damaging.
Most humbly respectfully submitted
