hi everyone
i have recently upgraded to a virgin hub which gives me 50 meg. my laptop is telling me its running at 56kbps, is this correct, or should it be faster?

Ok, on your system where it says 54 Mbps this is your wireless connection speed not your Internet connection speed. The best place to check your Internet connection speed would be the status page of your router where you can see upstream and downstream speed.

Alternatively there are a lot of websites which can test your connection speed but your router would still be more reliable:

Hello Woolcotts, where on your laptop are you looking to get the figure for your internet speed?

It maybe likely if you are hovering your cursor over your network connection that it says your wireless connection speed is 54.0 Mbps. Am I correct?

when i go to my Wireless network connection status, it says speed 54mbps.
You are right about that, my Laptop is running on windows 7, and don't get me wrong it run's fast, but my partner has a Laptop which runs on windows vista, and that is getting 300mbps! I can't work this out!

I just thought I would add that your partner is likely to recieve a 300Mbps connection as your router is likey to be Wireless N capable and so is her laptop however, your laptop is only Wireless G capable.

ok cheers, i understand that bit now, does that mean her laptop will be faster than mine?
I might have to buy a new laptop at this rate!
