You need a number of things to install XP from a CD
1. A bootable Windows XP CD - some of the early CDs were not bootable
2. The ability to enter the BIOS to change the boot order so that the PC boots from the CD
You hit Del, or F2 or F8 right after turning on the PC. Which key depends on the Computer make and model. Some computers ( like Dell ) will display which key to hit on the boot screen.

Change the boot order - insert the Windows CD - turn OFF the PC - turn on the PC if all has gone well it should slowly start and will display a lot of junk before offering the option to install Windows.

Good Luck

read this article which tells how to boot from a bootable cd and the CD/DVD drive as first boot device
