Why f5 key is not working to hook up a monitor to laptop

Hello,

I cannot get my external monitor to work with my laptop. It was working fine and all of a sudden the f5 key isn't working. I've tried with a couple different monitors so I believe it's my f5 key, although when I use it the selection does show up on my laptop but it doesn't connect the monitor.
