Greetings,
Reformatting the hard disk may help the DVD player recognize it but, lets face it sometimes hardware just isn't compatible with another. Do you have other hard disc? Try to plug them and see if the problem persists, otherwise, look at you owners manually for the DVD player and see types of usb devices it can support.
