Connecting laptop to tv

hi my problem too is similar .. but its not about any particular player(vlc etc)..the prob is only videos with a particular format(video clip) are getting displayed on tv and not others(like mp4 etc)..with these latter ones it shows on tv only a black screen with no video! can anyone help!
