Trying to recover data from hard drive

Hello,
I am trying to recover data from a laptop hard drive. I purchased a sate to usb lead and attached it to my new laptop running windows 7. The drive powers up but I cannot find external drive in disc management. I regularly use another external hard drive in a powered caddy and have no problems.

Can anyone shed any light on this. I am a computer novice so need a simple answer guys, Thanks.
