Hdmi sound through computer

Hello,
yes i am using a windows xp computer and when people say go to the sound and change from computer speakers to hdmi output i dont get that choice its only the computer speakers and i have video on my tv just no sound and dont or cant find a setting to change this and i have already contacted dell and they took control of my computer and couldnt figure it out... please help someone

Sound output thru the HDMI port requires a sound card/chip that also has an audio component. Older laptops (which yours might be since it's an XP machine) did not have have this hardware. Without the required hardware you can't get so0und thru the HDMI port. What model Dell are you using?
