Hello,

I received a used Dell xps 1640 a few months ago as a present. I have had numerous problems with it and have completely wiped it at least once before. I am currently having tons of bugs with it I think are related to viruses. I don't care about anything currently saved onto the laptop i just want to start fresh. How ever I can not access the Recovery menu from the F8 key and the Restore to Factory settings option is missing from the Windows Vista operating system disc. I have tried finding solutions else where but i can't find them. Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

P.S:I had to re-install Vista over my last installation to get my laptop to work again I don't know if that will affect anything.

Hello,

How old is the lap? What are the problems you encounter caused by viruses?

Reinstalling Vista, if it came with the lap should not affect anything.

If the following procedure does'nt work

https://ccm.net/faq/4189-restore-dell-laptop-to-factory-settings

Your recovery partition may have been deleted or disabled.

Let me know about the above. I might be able to at least give you a better diagnostic with a tool which I could send to you, that is if you can boot in safe mode with networking.

Good luck

The laptop is about 4 years old. The viruses have been causing my laptop to constantly freeze, flicker on and off momentarily and after a few weeks of running I always have to re-install Windows because every time I try to use my laptop The screen will go black after the dell logo appears. I also think the recovery parition is deleted with every re-installation.
Also, I do not have the recover your computer option.

To help you and precribe a remedy, I must make a diagnostic and to do so, I require a system log.

1. Boot in safemode with networking.

2. Open this link and download ZHPDiag2 :

https://www.zebulon.fr/telechargements/securite/systeme/zhpdiag.html

(Don't be alarmed is the site is in French, it sometimes happens, the tool will take your system language and allow the download if you get a warning message. Also clicking on the "hardhat" icon allows to change the language.)

3. Save the file on your Desktop.

4. Double click on ZHPDiag.exe and follow the installation instructions.

the tool creates three icons ZHPDiag, MRB, and ZHPFix (If necessary,we will use ZHPFix at the next step).

5. Double click on the short cut ZHPDiag on your Destktop.

6. Click on the screwdriver icon and ensure all of the items are checked.

7. Click on the Magnifying glass and run the analysys.

Wait for the tool to finished (maybe a long time)

8. Close ZHPDiag.

9. To transmit the report, click on this link :

https://authentification.site

10. Click on Parcourir and search the directory where you installed ZHPDiag (usually C:\Program Files\ZHPDiag).

11. Select the file ZHPDiag.txt.

12. Click on "upload »

13. Copy the url and post it here

Best regards
