Hello,

I have two different Western Digital Hard Drives. One is a 500 GB which has no problems. However, the larger 2 TB hard drive refuses to show up in my computer or disk management on boot. Until I unplug it and plug it back in I can't access any files on it or as I have said, see it in My Computer or Disk Management. As soon as I unplug it and plug it back in I gain full functionality, but this issue is frustrating and inconvenient. Does anyone know how to get my computer to recognize it right away.

For reference I am running Windows 7 home premium on an AMD FX-6100 and as I have said, Windows has no problem recognizing the smaller 500 GB model.

Hi ThayerBrianD,

I would like to know if the 2 TB Hard Drive is an external USB Hard Drive or an Internal SATA drive.

Please do write back to us.

My apologies,

The 2 TB Hard Drive is an external USB. The 500 GB is as well, if that matters.

Hi ThayerBrianD,

Thank you for replying. I need further clarification. You are connecting the 2 TB Hard Drive using USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports? Also reply with the exact model number of the Hard Drive.

Please do write back to us.

Well the hard drive is 3.0 and 2.0 compatible, but is plugged into a 2.0 USB port, as that is all that my computer has. The model number is WDBACW0020HBK.

Hi ThayerBrianD,

I looked up by the model number (WDBACW0020HBK) you provided to us. Yours is a Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive. There is firmware update available on Western Digital website. Try downloading and updating the firmware and see if this fixes the issue:
