Audio device

Hello,
i have a packard bell note book, it crashed, so i formatted it ,complete formate ,when i try playing an audio file it didnt bring out any sound i thought it was the speaker of the laptop but i was wrong, my friend said it was a sound device .that i will have to drive the sound, i dont understand what they saying ,please can you help me out, and please explan in details what a sound device is, i will appreciate it.and please if u have it please send it to me
