Hello,
Try this 1
Go to CMOS settings and check if your "Hard Disk" is detected or not.
Set your "Hard Disk" as the first boot --> Save the settings and exit from the
CMOS Setup.

I have found the ? Boot...thing...
It lists..CD/DVD
HDD
FDD
LAN
The CD/DVD is the one highlighted listed.....what should I choose ?
Thanks..I am not that PC literate unfortunately.

Still not Ok... Just gets to the same stage..black screen with cursor!

Try this 1
Check if you are able to boot using a Live CD "Puppy Linux". Click on the below link.
https://ccm.net/faq/12607-data-backup-when-windows-failed-to-boot
Download the puppy linux from the above link and you can find all the instructions to backup your data also.
This time again go to CMOS settings and set the first boot device as CD/DVD to boot from the Live CD after placing it in the CD/DVD drive.
Let me know if you are able to boot using the Live CD and can access the hard drive from it.
