Sound is gone from my laptop

Hello, I have a question wondering if anyone can be of assistance . I recently had my provider upgrade my antivirus software on my laptop and Im not sure what happened but the sound is completely gone , when I go to the control panel and click on the settings for sound to make sure it is on it is completely grayed out so Im unable to do anything . Can anyone help and advice me on what can be done, can I reinstall it or what not. This has become very frustating and I would like to avoid having to get a new computer if I can .
