Why wont my laptop leave the Starting Windows page?

This is probably a sign of a damaged copy of Windows. Here is what I would do: (in this order)
1. Use the Windows 7 Repair Disk, that you should have burned when the computer was new, to repair Windows.
2. try starting the laptop from a Ubuntu Linux CD. Failure to start would then indicate hardware problem(s).
3. remove the hard drive and do a disk scan on another PC. Finding bad sectors on the dive then points to it as the problem.
4. If you haven't identified the problem by this step - take the laptop to a good repair shop and pay them to run a problem diagnostic.
