I just had this happen to my WD 1 TB drive. I opened up the case, removed the hard drive, tested it as an internal drive on a desk top computer and found it had failed. It had the "click of death" syndrome.
I had a spare 360 GB WD drive that I installed in the case and got it works again. So you might be able to salvage the USB enclosure.
