Something to think about, even if you could move the apps to the sd card, you would not be able to run them from there.

Hello,
You described 2 problems, as far as I understand.
How to move apps on sd card: depending on your Android version, you can do this in the Settings App:
Settings > Application > Click on your application and, if the app allow this, you should have a button "Move to SD card" or something like that
See your phone as an external device: I don't really understand the difference you make between "seeing your phone" and "seeing your sd-card". Could you explain what you want?
@ac3mark: Android allows you installing your app on the sd-card...

If you want to move apps to your SD card, the process is likely to be something like this: Go to Apps menu, find the app you want to move. Then through that particular App's settings, select move to SD card.
