Hi Confused Monkey,
Okay I have experienced this with other games before s let me ask a few questions first.
Is your computer above the required system requirements for Sims 3?
Have you tried right clicking Sims 3 then going to properties then clicking the compatibility tab and clicking run this program as Administrator and run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3.
If this doesn't work then try all compatibility modes for it.
