I was clearing out some very unused stuff in my control panel the other day and although I know I didn't delete any thing of major importance, after I was done, I had NO sound. Went through all the trouble shooting things, but to no avail. I still get this irritating little 'beeeeeep" when its trying to tell me something, I guess that is what is called system sounds, but other wise, nothing, no voice, no music, nada! What could I possibly have done and how do I correct it? I'm a senior citizen on SS and no money to spare for computer repair. Please tell me this is something I can fix myself!!!

Hello

First questions:

1. What is your operating system ?

2. What is your computers make and model ?

3. Do you know how to reach the device manager on your computer?

4. Is the "irritating little 'beeeeeep" continuous?

Os is Firefox
Dell Intel Celeron D Processor
yes, already tried the device manager route, everything I click on says working properly
No the little beep is only when I am supposed to click on something, like when I'm playing solitaire and click for a new game.

One thing I forgot to mention is when I try to play anything on youtube, or any type of video, I get a message telling me that an error has occurred, to try again later. When I click on "learn more" it takes me to this:

Hi

Your operating system is not Firefox but XP, Firefox is your browser.

Those little beeps are normal and looks as if your computer is physically healthy.

Have you applied steps 5, 6, 7 and 8 written in the link you sent above?

Yes, I have tried every trouble shooter I can find, even checked on Microsoft and they said there wasn't anything else they could do and I should take it to a repairman. So I guess I'll just do with out sound for a while because I can't afford it now. :(

Before you go to repair, reinstall the audio card's sound driver which you will find on the Dell website for your Dell's model.

Aha! I did not think of that. They didn't give me an install disk and I didn't think about being able to get it on line! Thanks, will try that.

In most cases where sound fails, the sound driver must be either reinstalled or upgraded. If that fails, then the sound card is fried, but that is very rare that a sound card fries. Make sure you get the XP driver not windows 7 or 8.
