Laptop sound has a mind if it's own!

I have a dell laptop and for a while now the sound has just suddenly stopped when I'm in the middle of something. Quite randomly. If I restart the laptop then the audio will work again, for about 10 minutes or so. What could be the problem?

Something you can't fix.

It's probably an intermittent fault in the sound chip. Which in not replaceable. Perhaps you should look into a USB based soundcard.
