No sound driver

In April i downloaded something off the internet, soon i realized the sound icon on my HP laptop had a red cross next to it. I hovered over the icon and saw "No speakers or headphones are plugged in", i got confused. I later ran a scan, i saw one virus so it got deleted. Later i realized i had no sound drive, so i tried re-installing it, that didn't work. Then i tried installing a new sound driver, nothing happened. Is there any way i can get sound back onto my 2 1/2 year old HP laptop?

did you remove the red cross? as this generally shows the sound muted.

check in device manager audio setting as well

I pressed the mute button on my keyboard many times, nothing happened.
