Ok, keep upgrading to 8.1 See if that helps.
The fact that the userid for your account has changed might have locked you out. If the disk had any amount of security to it, you wil need to gain access with the origianl user id, which may be the older os. Not certain, but 8 has alot of problems, see if 8.1 doesn't help.

Perhaps this will work:
After plugging in the device, go to device manager (In run type "devmgmt.msc") In Device manager go to "Universal serial bus controllers" It should list the storage devices that you have connected to your PC. Right click and then click "Uninstall. Remove the USB drive and restart your system.
Try connecting the device again.

You may need to install the latest 8.1 updates and or a driver for your HDD. Have a look on the manufacturer's website.
Does it get recognized on another computer? If not your HDD might be shot.
