My HP laptop had gray scrolling lines running across it quite a bit so I did some research and was advised to download the latest BIOS driver. Right in the middle of it trying to install it froze up and wouldn't do anything. I waited a long time just in case it just wasn't finished. I tried all kinds of things like CTRL, ALT, Delete and just doing a hard shutdown, but nothing worked. I finally unplugged the power cord for a bit until the battery discharged. When I plugged it back in and turned it on, the lights came on, but nothing happened. Just a black screen. The caps light isn't blinking or anything. I tried to start it in safe mode, but to no avail. All I have is a computer that it on with a black screen. I can't do anything. I use the computer for my living and I have all kinds of files on it.

Does anyone out there have any ideas how I can get my computer to work again? This is very frustrating, as you can imagine.

Thanks for any help or advice!

When a BIOS update fails it can leave the PC in an unbootable state. The only option is to replace the physical BIOS chip with a correctly programmed one that matches the hardware on your computer. The problem with laptops is that the BIOS chip is often soldered to the motherboard. It might be cheaper to replace the laptop. Than to have someone disassemble it and either do a BIOS or motherboard replacement. Even a diagnosis from a PC repair shop might cost $100.

Good Luck

Hi xpcman,
Thanks for your reply. I have come to to the conclusion that I am going to have to get a different laptop. I was getting tired of that one anyway. lol
I have a friend/client who supposedly makes really nice computers and sells them
for a reasonable price, so I am going to send him an email in a minute to see if he
has anything for me!
Unfortunately I am on a budget and really can't afford to spend a lot at this time.
Things are looking up, though!
Thanks again!
Kathy
