Laptop can hear the fan , its on but nothing on the screen

My laptop had started having issues when starting , it would fire up then stall and just be ticking over as if in idle mode and eventually would start. now it fires up and nothing ...i can hear the fan , its on but nothing on the screen ...
help!

Could be your screen, try an external monitor.

Thank you for responce , tried that but nothing ... Although I may need to press fn -f1/2/3? Unsure ...

I am pretty sure the issue is with your screen and I can't repair it from where I am.
