Dell Inspiron 15 dark screen (not completely black)

Hello,
I own a dell Inspiron 15 5000 series and I have had a recent problem. When I turn on my laptop, I see the dell startup screen and my login screen pops up (I should note that I have windows 8.1). I login successfully and then where the start menu should be, all I see is a dark screen (not completely black) with my mouse pointer visible and able to move. I also am able to use the ctrl-alt-del tool with all options on there. Any ideas/ help would be greatly appreciated.
