My WD 1 TB portable HDD is not being recognized

Hello,
My WD 1 TB portable HDD is not being recognized in my Laptop. I am using Vista and 8.1 on two separate laptops. The drive is displayed in manage but not in disk management. If you try to open disk management with HDD connected computers hangs out and becomes normal on removing HDD.

Since it does not work on multiple computers I would ASSUME THE DRIVE HAS FAILED. About the only thing I can suggest is to try a different adapter cord.
