Dlink Router DIR-505; cannot connect to login page; internet ok

I have DIR-505 from Dlink that was configured to act as a repeater earlier. so I was able to set it up via its login page may be few months back.

Here is what I have done to reset it as a router now.
1. factory reset
2. default password for router allows computer and mobiles to connect OK to internet. I can access internet just fine.
3. I cannot access its web page for configuration.
4. I checked that my default gateway for internet connection is 192.168.0.1.
5. however, web page to that address gives message "connection refused".
6. I have checked many similar threads but have not found anything that would work in my case.

my only issue is how to access the webpage to change settings on the router. internet access works fine.

Any pointed guidance will be appreciated.
