When I turn on my laptop the screen stays black??

OK so, I was using my laptop last night and when I woke up it was still asleep, and wouldn't wake up or anything, so I tried turning it off and on again. I can hear the fan working and the caps lock button has the light on and everything, but the screen stays black. I have it turned off now. It's an HP laptop if that helps.

Unplug your battery and charger.

Hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge the laptop.

connect battery and cable and try again.
