To close the current window you can use Alt + F4.
From the desktop you can do the same shortcut to shut down.

If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

You could create a shortcut to turn off the display.

download NirCmd from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html and extract the file.

Right click the desktop and create a new shortcut

browse to the file and add cmdwait 1000 monitor off on the end.

Example:

"C:\path\to\nircmd.exe" cmdwait 1000 monitor off

Go into the properties of the shortcut and assign a shortcut key. Customise the icon if you wish.

Now when you do that shortcut key it will run the script which will turn off your display.

When you run it for the first time you might get a security warning. If you uncheck "Always ask before opening this file" it wont appear again.

If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0
