Laptop screen lights up for a while after booting then goes dark

Hello,
My old Dell Inspiron 1200 screen light comes on and the display functions normally for a while when booted, but then goes dark after about a minute.
Even after it goes dark, however, the screen is still visible although only dimly, and the display functions normally.
If I restart it, the same routine repeats.
Pls advise.

You probably have a hardware problem with the screen "backlight". A good PC tech can replace the backlight but it might cost more than to buy a new laptop.
