Hi Paul_Wyatt,
Could you check in Disk Management if the drive has a correct drive format? Search for the drive in Device Manager, under USB devices. Uninstall it, restart the PC and plug the drive back in. Check if you can access your files. Are those files important? Is formatting the drive an option? I would strongly recommend you to check the device with another USB cable and on another PC.
