Sound device problem

Hello,
When i play sound it says windowmedia player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device.there may be no sound device installted in your computer.it may used by another program,or it may not be fuctioning properly pls help me

First try System restore to the point just before u have lost the sound http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/support/sysrestore.mspx
