Cd and dvd no disc is inserted

whenever I insert a dvd or cd into the drive the message comes that no disc is inserted OR a page pops up asking me if I want to use the disc as a usb or copy files onto it as a cd or dvd. Also on clicking properties it shows the cd/dvd as unused, when in actual fact I had copied movies or other data or music or videos on them. What should I do to resolve and be able to play my recorded dvds or cds?
