Hello,
I have a 2TB WD MyBook HDD. For some time, it's been connected to my macbook as my sole music storage. Now that my Macbook has been deemed obsolete (Thanks el Capitan), I need to move my music to my PC. Problem is, my HDD isn't recognized by my newer PC. is this a compatability problem between Mac and PC, or is there something I can do to make it work? preferably without reformatting (loosing everything) or buying a new HDD.

The Mac OS uses a different disk formatting system than Windows. There a a couple of programs you can buy that allow Windows to read the Mac formatted disk. I suggest you Google "mac hard disk on PC" for more info.
Good Luck
