Hi mm,

I strongly recommend you to check the drive on another PC and with another USB cable. Open Disk Management and check if the drive is recognized. Does it have a drive letter and a file format? If it does not appear there, open Device Manager and search for the drive under USB devices. Uninstall it, restart the PC and plug the drive back in.
If the drive has a drive letter, try using the chkdsk D: /r command from the Command Prompt, where you must replace D with your drive’s drive letter.

Hope this helps

Is the hard drive working properly when connected to another PC? Have you checked Disk Management? Does the drive have a file format and a drive letter? Did the chkdsk command fail or it just did not show any positive result? I would suggest you to try booting from a Linux Live CD and try to access your data.
