Laptop going black

Hello,
when I am not using the computer the screen goes black and when I turn it back on I have to sign in again. is this common because I might be waiting for a call on Skype and it won't to through when I am not signed on which I was when I left the computer. Could you tell me if there is anything I can do to prevent this happening?

The computer is going into "sleep mode".
