I don't think it is sleep mode may be you have problem with the motherboard and you need a qualified technician.
If your laptop is under warranty you seek help from your laptop manufacturer.

Working on laptop motherboard is quite complicated for the non computer savvy, also it need lots of practice and knowledge about micro electronics.
If you will, then try the following two suggestions on your own risk:
1) Try to Remove your RAM from the slots and reseat it again properly and if you have two RAM insert each and every RAM seperately and try to switch on your laptop and see any difference there. ( Remove the power connections or battery completely while removing and replacing RAM)
2) Remove and reseat the CMOS battery on the laptop motherboard. ( it will change according to manufacturer and model of your laptop And i suggest you to refer your laptop guide book for this)
