I had the same problem. The only way I could fix it was to do the following:
Make a backup of your library files for ITunes.
Uninstall Itunes. Download and install ITunes 8.
Open ITunes 8 just to make sure you can. If it comes back with an error message about your library files being a more recent version, that's fine.
Install ITunes 9.
Hey presto, it worked!

hi,
uninstall it.
download iTunes again and install it.
this should work.
make sure that the connection does not interrupts during the download.
