No sound for the first time login

My laptop - Dell - Windows 8 - has a strange problem.

There is no audio during the first time log in despite the volume being at the highest.

Once I log out and re-log, the audio starts.

Also, even when I have plugged in the earphones, the laptop speakers also continue to play the audio.

Please help.
