Broken/DEAD laptops often need "hands-on" access by a computer Tech to diagnose and/or fix. With out the laptop in my hands and an hour to two to "play" with it. I can't begin to help you.
Either find an knowledgeable friend or pay a repair shop to do a full diagnostic.
