Hi John,
Have you tried just F10? If I'm not mistaken sony vaio's were, power on and spam the F10 key.
Alternatively, some vaio's had an option in the bios that needed to be enabled before the recovery partition would even work, and was disabled by default.
In that case spam the F2 key first, go into the bios, change the option, save and exit.
