Laptop won't boot

Hello,

I was just given A Toshiba Satellite C55 from a coworker. It has Windows 8.1 on it. The laptop will not boot. The power light comes on, but it's just a black screen and there are no sounds at all coming from the laptop like the fan starting to run or it booting. I've checked the power supply and it is good. I've also taken out the battery and plugged the power supply into the laptop. Still nothing. Is it possibly the motherboard?
