Toshiba has black screen after log in

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite cs5 A5310 using Windows 8. It was working fine until I accidentally separated my battery from it and it shut off. When I reconnected it the Toshiba start up screen came on but then the screen goes black and the fan powers down. The log on screen comes up but after I log in the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried holding down the power button, doing that and holding the escape button and disconnecting and connecting the battery. Nothing has worked! Please help! Since my laptop is old I'm afraid a technician will tell me to get a new one :(.
