If you have a new phone, and want to see your Gmail messages in the Gmail App on the new phone, add your account to the phone.
Depending on your phone and OS version:
Device Settings >> Accounts & Sync >> add account >> pick Google
Device Settings >> Accounts >> Google >> add account
On some phones you will have a Settings app - on others you need to use the main menu button to get to Settings.
