Hello,

I encountered exactly the same problem. The dvd drive stopped reading or writing and made all kinds of funny sounds.

I go to regedit, followed HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

but cannot find the brach \explorer.

I rightclick on 'policies', choose new key and entered 'explorer'

I then follow the brach \explorer, rightclick on the right pannel, choose new DOUBLE WORD (32 bit) Value and entered 'NoCDburning'

Then I rightclick on the word 'NoCDburning' and choose 'modify' and enter the value 1.

This fixed the problem for me.

If it's making "funny sounds" I suspect a mechanical failure. Sorry for the bad news.
