Outline is a very interesting alternative to traditional VPN solutions as it empowers you to create and configure your own VPN server and take advantage of a more blocking-resistant technology compared to its competitors.

What is Outline?

Outline is an open-source Shadowsocks-based proxy service developed by Jigsaw (a technology incubator created by Google). In a nutshell, it allows you to have your own VPN-like service for personal or professional use. It also offers other handy features and is particularly resistant to censorship. The Outline Client app offered here is one of two complementary products, together with the Outline Manager.

What are the key features of Outline?

• Encrypted: Outline encrypts communications between your device and the server using the AEAD 256-bit Chacha2020 IETF Poly 1305 cipher. AEAD ciphers offer confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, and provide excellent performance on modern hardware.
• Secure: Using a classic VPN service implies you protect your data and stay anonymous, except for the VPN service provider. Using Outline, you will get your own VPN and server, and because fewer users connect via this VPN, it is harder to detect.
• Resilient: Outline technology is resistant to some of the most complex forms of blocking mechanisms, like IP blocking, content blocking, or network-based blocking. Built using a protocol difficult to detect and block, you can reliably share access to your server with others.
• Configurable: You can add several access keys, name them, and dynamically connect to another server.
• No-log policy: Outline does not collect personal information unless you opt-in to provide it.

How to use Outline?

Once installed and launched, you need to get an access key generated from the Outline Manager. You need to either generate it yourself on your Outline Manager instance or reach out to someone you know who has set up your server. Once you have it, enter the access key and click on Connect.

Is it free?

Outline provides two main services, including Cloud and Self-Managed. The Self-Managed plan implies you host your server on your own infrastructure, and is free to use except for enterprises. On the other hand, the Cloud plan implies your server is hosted and managed by Outline, and you have to pay for it.

Is it safe?

Outline VPN is safe to use as it is open-source and has been checked by two security firms. Moreover, it doesn't collect user information, including hosting configurations, personal data, or browsing history. Consult the privacy policy for more details.
