Hello,
If your external hard disk is still recognized by Windows:
Test your hard drive with CrystalDiskInfo
Try to recover data from the hard disk with Testdisk-Photorec:
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step
If your external hard disk is not recognized by Windows:
Check the USB connection cable
See if it appears in the disk management
If it is no longer recognized and no longer works, it will be necessary to ask a specialized company to perform a data recovery, this operation is quite expensive.

Is Your External Hard Drive Corrupted or Not? Some Helpful Tips
In a situation where you cannot access your external hard drive, do not rush to take it to the service center. First, you need to check the external hard drive itself; perhaps it is not damaged at all. There are several ways to do this:
Check the power supply. It is likely that your hard drive has a separate power source. Therefore, checking the power supply will be very important.
Connect an external hard drive with another USB cable; the old one may just be broken.
Try to check the external hard drive using Disk Management. On the desktop, right-click on This PC (My Computer) -> Management -> Disk Management. Select an external disk among the volumes, then right-click on it and select “Mark partition as active”.
All these methods can be useful if your external hard drive is not detected by the computer.

Windows has a handy feature called CHKDSK (Check Disk) that you can use to analyze hard drive errors and run repairs automatically. You can check and repair your corrupted external hard drive via the following steps.
To start, open a new File Explorer window (click Windows key + E) then click This PC. Right-click on the drive that you wish to scan and then click Properties. The Properties window for the selected drive will now open. Here, click the Tools tab and then click Check under the Error checking section.

How was this hard disk corrupted?
Generally, a hard drive can be corrupted physically and logically. Physically corrupted drive often indicates the permanent data loss. However, the logically corrupted drive often can be fixed by formatting. The inner data also can be recovered at the aid of a recovery tool. What is your situation?
If the drive is logically damaged, luckily, you can try iBoysoft Data Recovery to get back your data and format this disk to see whether it can work as before. here is the guidance: https://iboysoft.com/data-recovery/how-to-recover-data-from-crashed-dead-hard-disk.html
If this drive is physically damaged, you’d better send it to a data recovery company and pay some money to get back the data.
Note: You should keep your important data backed up on a separate drive in the future.
Beat wishes!

My Opinion Recuva will help you to recover or undelete the file. It can recover from damaged or formatted disk. It has a quick-Start Wizard. It supports Windows OS and also supports more than 37 languages.
